Unfortunately a high percentage of Americans report feeling extremely stressed at work and while some stress can beneficial, extreme levels have health consequences. These problems may range from small things such as a cold to more serious diseases like heart disease. Because workplace stress is common, it is more realistic to manage it than search for a low-stress job. Here are some stress management techniques to try.

  1. Start the day off right with planning, proper nutrition and a positive attitude to prevent stress before arriving at work.
  2. Be clear on requirements by knowing exactly what is expected of you. If it is unclear, talk with your supervisor about strategies to meet your requirements.
  3. Avoid conflict among co-workers as much as possible and avoid those who don’t work well with others.
  4. Stay organized by planning ahead. This will reduce the amount of time spent rushing around trying to get things done.
  5. Be physically comfortable in your work environment. Even small things such as noise distraction or an uncomfortable chair may make you more reactive to stress.
  6. Walk at lunch or take periodic breaks throughout the day to help blow off steam while lifting mood and getting in shape.
  7. Listen to music on the way home. Music can bring many benefits such as decreasing stress so when you get home you will be more prepared to interact with the people in your life.
