On August 25th, 2016, the federal Office of Management and Budget approved a revised form I-9. This new Form I-9 is set to expire on August 31st, 2019 according to the OMB Notice of Action which is a similar three year validation period to previous forms. Employers may continue to use the current Form I-9 until January 21st, 2017, but after this date all previous versions will be invalid. Also, effective August 1st, 2016, fines for Form I-9 paperwork violations have nearly doubled. Prior to August 1st, 2016, the fine for a first offense ranged from $110 to $1,100 per violation. The new fine will cost employers anywhere from $216 to $2,156.
