What is the Best Hospitals Honor Roll? This list, released by US News each year, details the highest performing hospitals in the United States based on areas of specialty care and areas of general procedures and conditions. The purpose of the report is to enable those seeking medical care the ability and resources to make more informed decisions. US News ranked hospital performance in 16 areas of complex specialty care as well as several bellwether procedures such as hip replacements and lung cancer surgery to compile the honor roll.

  • 16 areas of complex specialty care scores: The Best Hospital Honor Roll takes into account the score of these 16 areas of complex specialty care, 12 of which are based entirely on quantitative data and four of which are based on qualitative survey responses. The complete rankings name the top 50 hospitals in the US for each of the 12 data-driven specialty areas: cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes & endocrinology, ear, nose & throat, gastroenterology & GI surgery, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology.
  • Procedures and Conditions Scores: The procedures and conditions ratings evaluate just about every hospital in the US on nine commonplace procedures, ones that should be treated successfully. The nine procedures that are evaluated within each hospital are colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, aortic valve surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, hip replacement, knee replacement, heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. The goal is to evaluate how well hospitals perform in each procedure or condition and not just with the most difficult cases, as with the specialty rankings, but with the full range of patients.

How did hospitals make the Honor Roll list? The 20 hospitals with the most and highest rankings and the greatest number of high performing procedures and condition rating form the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. Hospitals received points for their scores in the 16 areas of complex specialty care and were assigned points in the nine procedures and conditions ratings. Of all hospitals evaluated and ranked, the top 20 hospitals with the most points out of the 448 possible points formed the Best Hospitals Honor Roll.
