World Pneumonia Day is every year on the 12th of November. Established in 2009, this is an initiative to help communities who suffer from the disastrous effects of pneumonia and cannot access proper healthcare for the disease. This day was established to promote pneumonia awareness around the globe and highlight the need for more global access to treatment and better healthcare.
What is Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is the leading infectious killer around the world of children ages 5 and under. Pneumonia is the inflammation of the air sacs in one or both of the lungs. The air sacs can fill with fluid, and this causes coughing and difficulty breathing. The main goal of World Pneumonia Day and the "Stop Pneumonia Initiative" is to reduce childhood mortality.
Pneumonia is caused by bacteria and viruses in the air. These germs can find their way into your body and can overpower your immune system making you sick.
COVID-19 has made pneumonia especially deadly because it also affects breathing and can cause major lung issues. Also, the impact of COVID-19 on these communities has caused even greater mortality rates.
Symptoms of pneumonia may include:
- Cough (which may produce mucus)
- Fever, sweating, chills
- Shortness of breath
- Shallow, rapid breathing
- Stabbing chest pain
