Tips for a Healthier Holiday

The holidays are just a few days away, and while you may be rushing to get ready, you don’t need to let your health slip. Use this time off of work and with family to de-stress, catch up on sleep and reminisce on the year. Check out these tips on staying healthy this holiday season:

Eating:

  1. Don’t Skip Meals: You may want to save room for a meal later, but skipping meals can lead to overeating, and drinking on an empty stomach can increase the effects of alcohol.
  2. Turn Down Grandma’s Pie: Don’t force yourself to overeat to please a loved one. If you feel guilty, just try a very small piece.
  3. Weigh Yourself: Keeping track of your weight can prevent yourself from completely letting go of your diet and fitness habits.
  4. Set Goals: Think about adding a fitness goal to your New Year’s resolutions, and make it a little easier on yourself by starting now!
Drinking:
  1. Stop Drinking Early: Allow time for alcohol levels in your body to drop before heading to bed. The period during which your body is metabolizing the alcohol is when your sleep may be disrupted, preventing important restorative rest.
  2. Use Ice: Melting ice dilutes a drink, creating more liquid and helping you to drink responsibly.
Sleeping:
  1. Catch Up: Use your time off and the weekends to catch up on sleep. Studies have shown that recovery sleep can improve your concentration and alertness.
  2. Watch Out for Caffeine: Caffeine can be hidden in anything from chocolate to over-the-counter pain medications, so keep an eye out for this before consuming these products close to bedtime.
