New Year, New You!

Each January, about one third of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions. Only a small percentage stick with them: 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, and less than half (46%) are still on target six months later. However if you pick a realistic goal you are enthusiastic to start, you’re sure to follow through! Check out some ideas below:

  1. Stay in Touch: Sometimes it can be tough to keep in touch with far away family and friends. However, studies have shown that people with strong social ties live longer, so shoot someone a text or even write a meaningful letter to reconnect!
  2. Cut Down Stress: Stress can increase your risk of insomnia, depression, heart disease, obesity and more. Try to cut down on work hours if possible, and increase the time you spend sleeping, exercising, and spending time with family and friends.
  3. Volunteer More: Helping others can increase our happiness, reducing stress and making us less likely to develop health issues. Studies have shown that positive emotions can also make us more resilient and resourceful.
  4. Drop the Drinks: Drinking alcohol in excess can increase the risk of depression, liver and heart disease, hypertension, and stroke. Try to limit your intake and have your friends and family hold you accountable.
  5. Go Someplace New: Getting away from your normal scenery can be rejuvenating and replenishing. Taking even a day trip with friends or family can do wonders for your happiness and health.
  6. Sleep: Lack of sleep can increase your risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Get a good night’s sleep to strengthen your memories, and improve your mood and appearance.
