December is Safe Toys and Gifts Month so that parents can keep children’s holiday toy time safe. Do you know what toys are safe for your child? Here are some tips for picking appropriate toys:

  • Consider the child’s age, interests and skill level when picking a toy.
  • Make sure to follow all age and safety recommendations on labels
  • Use a small parts tester to determine whether small toys could pose a choking hazard (these can be purchased at toy or baby stores usually)
  • Avoid toys with strings, straps or cords longer than 7 inches pose risk for strangulation
  • Avoid electrical toys with heating elements for children under 8 years old
  • Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant
  • Stuffed toys should be washable
  • Painted toys should be covered in lead free paint
  • Art materials should say “non-toxic”
  • Steer clear of old toys, even hand-me-downs from friends and family
  • Avoid toys that are too loud and could cause hearing damage
